To understand this awesome product deeper, let’s get to know the Mom behind this, our MomStar of the Month, Janna Hattingh.

What is MomStar of the Month all about?

MomStar of the Month shares inspirational stories of women, no matter what background, ethnicity or race; has a great career or not, is a first-time mom or not, it doesn’t matter.

Any Mom is a star in her own ways and with these stories, we share the journey of moms who aim to inspire others and transform lives with a purpose.

We highlight different women in our society, with their spirit to motivate others. A unique opportunity for all of us to hear and understand how these Moms learned how to flourish and balance their lives in today’s overwhelming world.

1. Tell us about yourself, your background and your family.

My name is Janna, I am the owner of Booby Food, wife and mama to my sweet babe Sage – wrecker of nipples.  My background is mostly all in health, nutrition and food service, with a degree in Kinesiology and diploma in holistic nutrition.

I’ve always been fascinated with the body and how magical it is.  I was on track to begin Naturopath school when the night I secured my reference letter, I found out I was pregnant.  Life always has better plans than you do!

2. How did you start your business-Booby Food and what inspired you to come up with such an incredible name for a brand?

Booby Food really makes up the essence of the phrase ’necessity is the mother of all invention.’

My little guy, Sage was born SGA (small for gestational age) and immediately started on formula.  My birth plan was to exclusively breastfeed from day 1, but you know, birth plans are always so great on paper!

We did manage to wean him off formula and onto the boob after his weight stabilized, but from there – breastfeeding was an uphill battle.

Your breastmilk supply is established in the first 6 weeks, and without demand – your supply can’t reach its full potential.  I struggled with postpartum anxiety around feedings and not feeling ‘good enough’ with my low supply.  Pumping was defeating and at my pumping height, I had maybe 6 bags full.

By the time it came for Sage to start solids, I so badly wanted to add breastmilk into his foods for the extra nutrients and calories, but I couldn’t bear the thought of thawing a whole bag just to use 1/2 and chuck the rest.

There had to be another way… cue freeze drying my breastmilk into powder – and Booby Food was born.

I named my company Booby Food because I wanted to bring a smile and maybe evoke a little lightness and laughter around a subject that can be incredibly sensitive and difficult to talk about.

My goal is to educate, inform and support mamas (of all kinds) in their journeys because we’re all doing the best we can with what we know at the time.

3. What are you proud of recently? How was the first month of 2021 – any big or small achievement you’d like to share?

I am dang proud of all the hustle I’ve done to get to where I am now, which fuels me for where I’m going in the future!

2021 so far is a whirlwind!

I am a Top 5 Finalist in Canada’s Total Mom Pitch which I am beyond stoked for and am so grateful and appreciative for the mentorship and endless opportunities that are coming.

I have bigger news that totally eclipses anything I’ve done so far, but for that, you’ll have to wait!

4. Have you faced difficult times even more during this pandemic and what did you do to overcome them?⁣

Booby Food is a trailblazing company.  While the research on freeze drying breastmilk dates back to the 1950s and milk banks around the world have used this technology for their donor milk for decades, this has never been offered as a service direct to mamas before.

I faced a lot of uphill challenges and gaining Health Canada and AHS approval was an incredibly long and scrupulous process.

We ended up launching right in the middle of the 1st wave of Covid and after working so damn hard to finally get going, you better believe I wasn’t going to let a pandemic hold me back!

Study after study showed that breastmilk has protective factors against the coronavirus and it now more than ever that mamas never waste a drop of their liquid gold.

5. Would you be able to share to us some strategies on how you balance business and motherhood?

Words of Wisdom: there is no balance of motherhood and work, it’s a complete myth.  The more you try to balance, the more you end up juggling.

I prefer to focus my attention and segment my day in ‘blocks.’

I know when I’m at work, either at the Booby Food facility or up late nights on my laptop that it’s “work time.”

When I make my babe breakfast, take him for a walk, make dinner together and read bedtime stories, that’s “Sage/Family” time.  I do my best to not let work creep into family time, but as an entrepreneur with big goals – things slip.

My father was an entrepreneur too, he worked ‘8 days a week.’  While of course, I longed for more time with him, I know I got my work-horse mentality and wanting to provide the best for my family because of him.

He is my inspiration and even though he passed almost 7 years ago – he was the best example of a father I could have ever known.  I hope Sage will see me like that one day.

6. Leave us a message to all our aspiring business owners whether they are working moms or stay at home moms.

You have two choices for basically everything in life.

Do nothing, or do something.  If you do nothing, nothing will happen – but if you do something… there are endless possibilities.
