Family New Year

From Passion to a Side Hustle: A 2020 Year End Review

There’s no doubt that 2020 has been a year like no other.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure whether I was going to write a Year end Review blog post this year at all. I planned to do this since I started blogging back in 2019, but considering all that 2020 has brought, the thought of it just lifted my hesitations.

As you may have noticed, it’s been awhile since I last published a post and although 2020 was not the greatest year for everyone, I realized that there are some valuable things that happened as well.

So I decided to create a video of it and transcribed it here. If you haven’t checked it out, please free to visit the channel.

So before I start, I just want to greet you a Happy New Year!

It has been tough for the last year and I think we can all relate to this. However, it doesn’t mean that we forget all the positive things that we’ve learned in 2020.

So today, I just want to look back and do a year-end review.

Goodbye 2020 and Hello 2021!

I actually started a blog with no experience at all back in 2019 when I was on Maternity leave, and at that point I decided to turn it into a business which we continuously evolved. Now we have MamaBuzz Creations.

So let’s start off with January. We were able to join the Fundraising Gala of Real Biz Moms. This real biz community was founded by Vivian Rajic, an incredible and amazing woman who was able to connect and build a community of mompreneurs. She aims to empower and support Mamas to redefine motherhood in a way that works best for them.

At that time, I was able to meet other local mompreneurs and I’m so happy that to this day, we are still connected with each other. In fact, there’s already a membership and we are now part of the founding members!

In February, we actually received our business license for MamaBuzz Creations!

At MamaBuzz Creations, we offer matching shirts and custom designs and throughout 2020, we continuously evolved. We started with matching shirts for Couples, Mom and Baby, Dad and Baby and also for the whole family.

Eventually, we have added custom designs and are creating aprons, hoodies, mugs, tumblers, puzzles, tote bags and more. There were a lot of opportunities that this blog has truly brought me in 2020.

March 2020 was the start of the pandemic. In the MamaBuzz blog, we actually opened our Etsy shop. I did not put much effort into this platform, however, within three days of opening we received some orders and sales kept growing!

From those sales, we received some raving reviews. So thank you so much to our customers and also our friends who’ve been supporting us!

In April, we were interviewed in an online podcast, How Moms Make Money Online by Charlotte Noble. I am so happy that I was able to share my story to fellow mompreneurs because there really are a lot of possibilities.

As I mentioned, I didn’t have any experience in business, marketing and blogging. Right now, I have both, so that is really a positive thing!

In May, we had our lockdown. We were at home and was doing our workout with the baby. We actually started uploading our Mom and baby dance workouts and I’m so happy that I was able to do it, because we continue watching it to reminisce all those moments when I was with him at home.

In June, we started our collaborations for our MamaBuzz & Beyond series where I interview and feature local mompreneurs who offer products and services that are geared towards pregnancy, postpartum, fitness, self-care or anything related to motherhood.

That was the start of where I was able to do some recordings. Of course, I haven’t posted and published these yet so that is something that you’re going to be watching and looking forward in 2021.

We were also able to collaborate with Alpina Photography for her photoshoot; thank you so much my dear friend for that experience. Your photos were amazing!

In July and August, we continued to do our recordings and the pandemic became even worse and we had another lockdown. I became busy and just wanted to focus on my work. But it wasn’t bad after all.

In August, we got a project for a web design. I was able to help a dear friend and we were able to launch his company website, Flawless Painting and Decorating. Thank you so much Aurimas for allowing me to help you!

Then in September, we have collaborated with other local mompreneurs.

Let’s start with Rachel from WP Creations, she makes keepsakes for newborn babies and that was amazing.

Then we have Janna from Booby Food, thank you so much for that experience and I can’t wait to publish your recording.

Then we also did one for Jessie Tucker from Drop Shop Off Relax. We had mom and baby yoga and that was amazing.

We also did one for Balletiques which is a Barre Fitness Class and we actually experienced this first-hand with my son while on Maternity Leave.

Of course, the first video that we have launched for the MamaBuzz & Beyond series was from Cher from Dragonfly Maternity where we did a postpartum yoga.

In October, we collaborated with our very own, Zeinab, thank you so much for that opportunity to record a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Affinity Academy.

We also had an ads contract for a research project specifically for postpartum women. This was research done through the University of Saskatchewan. They actually had this survey posted in our blog, so that was a great milestone for all of us.

Then, in November, we continued to support local mompreneurs through our designs and I also partnered with my dear friend, Mari-Anne, from Hot Touch Gifts.

In December, I became so busy and got overwhelmed. There’s a lot of things happening and it’s been tiring nine months since the pandemic. I slowed down with my blog but that’s okay!

That’s what we need to remember right? Sometimes we need to have a break and step back so that we can gain our momentum. We actually have received more gracious orders and we continued evolving with our designs from aprons, mugs, tumblers and shirts; you name it!

In the blog, we were also able to connect with a lot of women whom we have featured for our Momstar of the month.

We have, Vivian Rajic from REAL Biz Moms, Allie, from Mom Market Calgary and Rosey Hwang of Be Unstoppable.

We also have Jena from Live Core Strong, Nici Brooks from Sassy Smart and Simple, Jennifer from Postpartum Support Group Calgary

So to end, I just want to take this opportunity to really stress that with our year-end review, it’s not all about collaboration, sponsorships and ads.

It’s not all about that. What I truly enjoy the most is the connection and building the community of like-minded women and also giving that inspiration to others.

As you all know, motherhood is not that easy and as a first-time mom, I was able to share our stories and adventures with all of you. Also, sharing how to turn your passion into a side hustle! That is what really matters to me. I get the opportunity to inspire all of you and I’m able to connect with the audience that I have been longing to really connect with.

So, 2020 thank you so much and 2021, I hope you’ll be good to us!

Thank you so much and have a Happy New Year.
